Ploidy level in the genus Leucanthemum correlates with resistance to a specialist herbivore

چکیده
Polyploidy is considered to be a major source of genetic diversity in plants. Genome duplication has been shown repeatedly to be associated with changes in biotic interactions, but little is known about whether species traits such as herbivore resistance consistently change with increasing ploidy level among closely related plant species. We tested whether larval survival and performance of the specialist rootmining moth Dichrorampha aeratana are influenced by the ploidy level of plant species in the genus Leucanthemum by experimentally infesting 16 different taxa with ploidy levels ranging from diploid to dodecaploid. We found that survival of D. aeratana larvae consistently decreased with increasing ploidy level, irrespective of whether phylogenetic distance among taxa was taken into account or not. The mass of larvae and the proportion of adults emerging from lastinstar larvae, however, did not consistently change with increasing ploidy level. Root biomass and dry matter content of the Leucanthemum taxa were neither correlated with ploidy level nor correlated with survival or mass of D. aeratana larvae. In summary, our results provide evidence that in the genus Leucanthemum, resistance to the specialist root herbivore D. aeratana consistently increases with increasing plant ploidy level, but it remains unclear which characteristics associated with polyploidy account for the higher herbivore resistance.

The Feasibility Study on the Prediction of Ploidy Levels Base on Pollen Dimensions in Rosa
Ploidy level is one of important factors for plant breeders; therefore models that can predict it are very practical. To estimate of ploidy levels in some species, hybrids and cultivars of Rosa, dimensions of over 500 pollens include pollen length, width and area measured at ABRII. The calculations were carried out in several stages. First, Ploidy levels were regressed with pollen dimensions, a...
متن کاملIdentification of Qanat fishes in Taft and Mehriz (Yazd-Iran) via DNA barcoding
In this study fish in 8 Qanats in Taft and Mehriz townships of the Yazd Province were compared to specimens from Sirvan, Karun, Mond, Kor Rivers, Kerman and Namak basins. In the studied Qanats, Capoeta saadi and Cyprinion sp. were observed. The haplotypic diversity in Qanats was zero. Capoeta saadi haplotype observed in Qanats was similar to haplotype observed in the Kor basin. Cyprinion sp. ha...
متن کاملChromosome Number Variation in Iranian Populations of Acorus calamus
Different ploidy levels, diploid (2n=2x=24) to hexaploid (2n=6x=72) have been reported for Acorus calamus, a perennial medicinal plant. According to available information, there is a significant relationship between the ploidy level and essential oil compositions and medicinal properties of this important genetic resource. However, there is no information about the chromosome number of A. calam...
متن کاملSpatial and Temporal Potato Intensification Drives Insecticide Resistance in the Specialist Herbivore, Leptinotarsa decemlineata
Landscape-scale intensification of individual crops and pesticide use that is associated with this intensification is an emerging, environmental problem that is expected to have unequal effects on pests with different lifecycles, host ranges, and dispersal abilities. We investigate if intensification of a single crop in an agroecosystem has a direct effect on insecticide resistance in a special...
متن کاملPlant-mediated effects of host plant density on a specialist herbivore of Solanum carolinense
1. Host plant density can affect insect herbivore oviposition behaviour, which can, in turn, affect both plant and herbivore populations. Because clear generalisations about density effects on oviposition remain elusive, a better understanding of underlying mechanisms is needed. One such mechanism is plantmediated effects (i.e. changes in plant traits with density), which are often suggested bu...
